Our place is at 377-A on Vellakinar Road. We are directly opposite Cheran Colony, so we see the people coming in and out of there all day. It’s a big yard mostly, filled with different kinds of stone and granite slabs leaning against each other. The work is heavy and we spend a lot of time using the crane or just moving things by hand when they are small enough. In Thudiyalur Post, the weather can get pretty dry, so the dust from the stones gets on everything. We wear old clothes because there is no point in trying to stay clean here. The office is just a small room at the corner of the lot with a few filing cabinets and a calendar on the wall. We spend the mornings checking the new arrivals and making sure the slabs aren't cracked or chipped. Vellakinar Road has a lot of trucks moving through, so it is never really quiet. When we aren't loading anything, we sit on the plastic chairs outside and watch the traffic go toward Cheran Colony. It is honest work and it keeps us tired by the end of the shift. We don't have a showroom with fancy lights, just the stone out in the open air where people can see it. It’s a practical setup for the kind of work we do here. We just take it day by day.
