System Engineers

Our office and workshop are at Plot No. 625, which is right near the Excise Building. It’s a handy landmark because everyone knows where that is. We do a lot of technical work here, mostly related to engineering systems and layouts. It’s not as noisy as a forge, but there is always a steady sound of computers and small tools. We have a few drafting tables that are usually covered in coffee cups and scribbled notes. Sometimes we spend hours just looking at a single component trying to figure out why it’s not clicking into place. The light in the morning is really good through the front windows, but by the afternoon it gets a bit dim, so we have some bright shop lights we turn on. We aren't a huge corporation; we are just a handful of people who like solving mechanical problems. We don’t wear suits or anything like that. Most days it’s just jeans and work shirts. We talk a lot about the projects over lunch, which we usually eat together. The Excise Building next door always has people coming and going, so the street stays pretty busy. We’ve been at this plot for a while and the walls are covered with old calendars and charts we’ve used over the years. It’s a comfortable place to work and we just take things one day at a time.
