Our workshop is over at No.5 in the Ekambaram Industrial Estate. If you are familiar with the Alapakkam area in Chennai, you already know it’s a very busy zone with a lot of heavy lifting and trucks moving around constantly. We have been tucked away here in this corner of Thiruvallur for many years now. Since it’s an industrial estate, the air is usually a bit dusty and it stays quite loud with the sound of machinery from the neighbors, but we’ve grown used to it. Tool Aids is basically just a few of us who really know our way around equipment and industrial supplies. We don’t spend any time on fancy decorations or making the front office look impressive to visitors. The walls could honestly use a fresh coat of paint, but we keep the workbenches clean and ready for the next job. Most of our days are spent dealing with the intense Chennai heat and making sure the orders keep moving out on time. We see the same faces from the other units around the estate every day, which gives it a nice community feeling despite all the grease and grit. We just keep our heads down and manage the tools and materials that people come to us for. It isn’t a glamorous way to earn a living, but it’s what we are good at. The summers are really tough in a warehouse like this, but the fans keep going. We are regular people running a business in Tamil Nadu.
