We are located at 240 Royapettah High Road, right in the thick of things. It’s been T S Mahalingam And Sons for a long time now, and not much has changed about the way we do things. The building is old but it stays sturdy, even with all the heavy buses rattling the windows outside all day. You can hear the horns from the morning till late evening. It’s just how Royapettah is. Most people who come here have been coming for years, or their fathers did. We don’t have much in the way of fancy furniture or air conditioning that works all the time, but we have the files and the ledgers. The floor gets dusty because of the road work that always seems to be happening nearby, but we just sweep it out and get on with the day. My father used to say the location was everything, and he was probably right, even if the parking is a nightmare. We drink a lot of tea from the small shop around the corner and talk to the neighbors about the weather. It’s a busy life here in Chennai. We don't spend much time worrying about how the office looks to outsiders. If the work gets done, that is what matters to us at the end of the day. The sign outside is a bit faded from the sun, but everyone knows where we are. We just keep the doors open and see who comes in.
