Kk Rice Mandi

You can find Kk Rice Mandi at number 10, Valmiki Street in Thiruvanmiyur. Our street gets quite a bit of dust because of all the trucks that come through to drop off supplies. We mostly deal with large bags of rice. The different varieties are stacked up high against the walls. The smell of raw grain is something you always notice when you walk in. It’s a very distinct scent that stays on your clothes. Moving these heavy sacks is a lot of work and our backs feel it by the end of the day. We are just ordinary people trying to earn a living. The floor is made of old concrete and it stays cool, which is nice during the summer months. People from the nearby houses come by on their scooters to get their monthly rice. We help them carry the bags out if we aren't too busy with another customer. We don't have any fancy signs or bright lights inside. It’s just the stacks of rice and an old weighing scale that we've used for years. It sometimes needs a little tap to get it to balance correctly. Most of our customers are families who have been coming to us for a long time. There is a small tea stall just down the road where we go when we have a few minutes to spare. It’s a quiet life and we just keep the shop running.
