Karthikeyan Modern Rice Mill

Our mill is located at No: 5/59 on T.H. Road in the Attanthangal area of Red Hills. Because the rice hulling machines are almost always running, the noise level is quite high. Farmers arrive throughout the day with tractors piled high with paddy. The whole place has that thick smell of fresh grain and dry earth. We have been working here for many years, and while the mill is modern, the labor is still very physical. We are constantly hauling bags and checking how the rice looks as it pours out. Fine white dust covers everything, including our clothes and the walls. There is no fancy office or air conditioning to be found here. We just use a small corner with a stool and a table to keep our records. During the middle of the day, the heat inside can become very intense. We usually take a break in the shade of the trees outside to eat our lunch. T.H. Road is always packed with heavy trucks and noisy traffic. We don't spend money on advertising or anything like that. People in the area just know our location and bring their grain to us. It is hard work that leaves us tired by the end of the shift, but it’s what we know. We just focus on getting the bags packed and ready for the market. It’s a steady, noisy life that we’ve grown used to.
