Being in Chennai means there is always something happening to take a picture of. I started Karan Photography a while back after spending years just carrying a camera around for fun. Now I spend my time going from one hall to another or meeting people at their houses for small functions. It’s a lot of waiting for the right light or trying to get kids to sit still for five minutes. I don’t have a massive studio with neon signs or a big staff. It’s mostly just me and my gear in a bag. Chennai heat can be tough when you’re carrying heavy lenses around all day, but you get used to it after a while. I handle weddings, birthdays, and the occasional office event when someone needs a record of the day. I spend many nights sitting at my desk looking at screens and trying to make sure the colors look natural and clear. I don't use a lot of those fake-looking filters because I like things to look the way they actually happened. Sometimes the batteries die at the worst moment or the memory cards fill up too fast, but that’s just how the job goes. People in the city want memories they can keep on their phones or print out for old albums. I try to stay out of the way during the ceremony so I don’t block anyone’s view. It’s a quiet way to make a living and I get to see a lot of happy families during their best moments.
