Jayalakshmi Modern Ricemill

Out here on Rice Mil Road in Vadakarai, things stay pretty consistent. We are located at No 42 A, which is a part of Redhills that sees a lot of this kind of activity. The mill has been part of the landscape for some time. You can smell the grain in the air before you even get to the door. We don't spend much time on decorations or making the place look like a corporate office because that wouldn't make much sense for what we do. It’s a workplace, plain and simple. The machines are old but they still do the job they were meant to do. We spend our days managing the intake and making sure the processing goes as it should. There are usually a few of us around, moving bags or checking the settings on the equipment. The floor is concrete and often covered in a thin layer of husk. Redhills is a good area for this, and being on this specific road makes sense for a business like ours. We open up early and stay until the day's work is finished. It’s not a complicated setup. We just focus on the rice and the machinery. Sometimes the heat gets to be a lot in the afternoons, but we just keep going. It’s a quiet life in some ways, despite the noise of the mill. We are just local people doing a job that needs doing every day.
