Being in Sector 36 at Sco-209 means we are right in the commercial hub. There are shops and offices all around us. Physics Zone is on one of the upper floors. I have to climb the stairs every morning, and usually, the mail is tucked under the door by the time I arrive. The SCO buildings all look the same, so I tell people to look for the staircase next to the pharmacy. Inside, it’s mostly just white walls and rows of desks. I keep a calendar on the wall with all the important dates circled in red. We have a lot of students coming from different parts of the city because the bus stop is quite close. I spend my afternoons checking the homework and setting up the problems on the board for the next class. The air conditioner works well, which is a relief because these buildings can get very stuffy in the summer. I have a small kettle in the back to make tea for myself when I have a break. Sometimes the hallway gets noisy with people from the other offices, but we just close the door and focus. It’s a practical space. Nothing is there for show. We just have what we need to study. By the time I lock up at night, the whole building is usually quiet and I can finally hear my own thoughts.
