About Madan Lal And Krish Lal – Art & Craft in Chandigarh
The Grain Market in Sector 26 is always a mess of trucks and people shouting. We are over at SCO 112. It’s been Madan Lal And Krish Lal for a long time now. My father and uncle started things, and we just kept it moving. The air is always full of that dry, dusty smell of grain. We deal with big sacks of wheat and rice mostly. It’s heavy work. You spend half your life loading and unloading stuff. The floor is concrete and stays cool even when it’s hot outside. We have a small desk in the corner with a lot of papers piled up. Sometimes the phone rings and it’s someone asking about prices, and other times it’s just someone lost in the market. We don't really have a lobby or a waiting area. It is just a working space. People come in, they check the quality, and we settle the bill. We drink a lot of tea while we work. It helps pass the time when things are slow between truck arrivals. Dealing with the weather is the hardest part. If it rains, we have to move everything fast so nothing gets damp. Sector 26 is loud and busy, but that is just the way a grain market is supposed to be. SCO 112 is where we spend most of our waking hours. It’s not a fancy office, but it works for us. We just keep our heads down and work.
