About Gujarat Handlooms & Handicrafts Emporium – Art & Craft in Chandigarh
Walking into the shop at SCO 7 in Sector 20 D, you immediately notice the smell of dyed fabric and cotton. It is a very specific scent that stays with you. We have stacks of hand-woven cloths and various handicrafts piled up on every available surface. The shop sits right on Dakshin Marg, so there is a constant flow of vehicles passing by outside. Inside, though, it feels a bit slower and more deliberate. We spend a lot of time unfolding fabrics for people to look at and then folding them back up again neatly, which is a lot more work than it sounds. The shelves go all the way up to the ceiling, so we have to use a wooden ladder to reach the stuff at the top. Some of the patterns are quite old and traditional, and we have to explain the different weaving styles to anyone who asks. The lighting is meant to show off the colors, but sometimes it just makes the room feel a bit warm. We keep a ledger on the main counter to track what goes out. It is a family-run sort of vibe here, and we have regular customers who come back every season for new materials. The floor is tile and stays relatively cool even when it is hot outside. We just keep things moving, making sure the displays look decent and the inventory is counted correctly every week.
