About Simran Cane Handicraft – Art & Craft in Chandigarh
Our workshop is at S-224 in the Phase I Industrial Area. It’s a place where we spend all day working with our hands. You’ll find piles of raw cane and bamboo stacked up against the walls. The smell of cut wood and varnish is always in the air. We make all sorts of things like chairs, tables, and baskets. It’s a messy process, with shavings and bits of reed all over the floor, but that’s how a real workshop looks. We’ve been here in the industrial zone for a long time. People come to us because they want something that isn't made of plastic or metal. Every piece we finish is a little bit different because that's just how natural materials work. Sometimes a chair takes longer to weave than we expected, but we don't like to rush it. My staff and I sit on low stools for hours, getting the tension right on the weaves. It’s hard on the fingers, but it’s what we know how to do. We don't have a glossy catalog or a website with perfect photos. You just come to the unit, see what we’re making, and pick something out. It’s a humble business, and we like it that way. Most of our customers are locals who appreciate the time it takes to build these things by hand. We just keep working away at the next project until it’s ready to go.
