Our workshop, Amson Transformer, is located at D 201, right opposite the Municipal School near the Chandigarh G.P.O. It’s a bit of an odd spot for a place that deals with heavy electrical equipment, but we’ve made it work for a long time. You can usually hear the kids playing during recess while we are inside winding coils or checking circuits. It’s a lot of copper wire and heavy iron cores around here. Transformers aren't something people think about until the power goes out, and then suddenly everyone is looking for us. We spend a lot of time on the floor, testing things and making sure the insulation is right. It’s greasy work sometimes. The building is old and the paint is peeling in some spots, but it keeps the rain off the equipment. We have a small crew, just a few guys who have been doing this since they were young. We don't really have a front office, so if you come by, you usually just walk straight into the work area. We try to keep things organized, but when three different jobs come in at once, it gets a bit messy. It’s just how it goes in this trade. We drink a lot of chai and talk about the old days when everything was built to last forever and you could fix anything with a wrench.
