Chilarai Farmer Producer Company Limited is based in Kakragaon village over in Bongaigaon. Krishna Kanta Singha is the one who looks after the address and the main office tasks for us. We are just a group of local farmers who live and work in this area. Life here is mostly about the farming cycles, planting when it’s time and harvesting when the weather lets us. We don't have any big marketing plans or anything like that. We just wanted to have a legal name so we could deal with the government and the banks more easily as a group. The house in Kakragaon serves as our meeting point. Sometimes the meetings go on for a long time because everyone has a different opinion on what we should grow next. We deal with the usual stuff like rice and local vegetables. Bongaigaon can get quite busy, but our village is a bit tucked away. We spend a lot of time worrying about the water and if the pests are going to be a problem this year. It is honest work and it keeps us tired. By the time the sun goes down, we are usually done for the day. Having the company helps us feel a bit more secure, like we aren't just out there on our own. We just take it one day at a time and try to keep the books balanced.
