We are just a bunch of folks from Bazal Gaon who decided to get together to handle our crops better. It started at Madhab Saikia’s house because that’s where we usually meet up anyway. Living out here in the Ghumtibill area, things aren’t always easy with the weather and getting things to market. Most of us have been farming since we were kids, learning from our fathers. We registered Surujmukhi Farmer Producer Company Limited mostly to have a formal name when we talk to the bank or buy seeds in bulk. It’s not a big fancy office or anything. We just use the space we have. Some days are spent arguing about which seeds are better for this season and other days we just sit and drink tea while waiting for the rain to stop. Being a farmer here means you work hard and hope for the best. We don't have a marketing team or big trucks. We have our hands and a bit of shared equipment. The village is small and everyone knows each other, so there’s no room for pretending. If a crop fails, we all feel it. If the harvest is good, we all breathe a bit easier. That is how it goes for us. We just keep going, day after day, trying to make sure the work we do in the fields actually pays for the food on our tables. It is a simple life but it is ours and we stay with it.
