We are located over at K1/7706/5 in the G.I.D.C. area, right near the Karmatur Chowkdi. If you know the area, you know it’s mostly workshops and factories around here. We do engineering work, which basically means we fix machines and make parts when something breaks down. Our shop is full of lathes, drills, and bits of scrap metal that we might need later. It’s a greasy job, and our hands are usually stained with oil by ten in the morning. We don’t mind it, though. There’s a certain satisfaction in taking a broken piece of equipment and making it work again. People from the nearby plants often drop by when they’re in a pinch and need a quick repair. We try to help them out as fast as we can because we know how much a stopped machine costs them. It’s just a few of us working here, so it’s pretty informal. We have a small desk for the bills, but most of our time is spent standing at the workbench. The noise from the G.I.D.C. is constant, with trucks moving and other shops grinding away, so we’ve learned to talk loud. We’ve been at this spot for quite a while and have seen the neighborhood change, but our work remains pretty much the same day in and day out. We have a small corner where we keep our tools locked up at night, and we usually start the day with a quick talk about what needs to get finished by evening.
