Uttara Karnataka Food Speciality Stores is our little shop in Malleshwaram, right there in the Sai Chamber on the 100 Feet Ring Road. We focus on getting all those traditional foods from the northern parts of the state down here to the city. You’ll find things like the dry jolada rotis, different kinds of spicy chutney powders, and those specific pickles that you can’t really find in the big supermarkets. The shop isn't very large, and the smell of spices is quite strong as soon as you step inside. We get our supplies from small vendors back in the villages, so sometimes the packaging looks a bit plain, but the taste is what people come for. Malleshwaram has changed a lot with the new roads and traffic, but we try to keep the shop feeling like an old-fashioned place. We don't use any fancy barcodes or scanning machines, we just know the prices and write them down. It’s often just me and my wife working here, and we spend a lot of our time chatting with the regulars who have been coming to us since we opened. We aren't looking to expand into a big chain or anything, just keeping these traditional tastes alive is enough for us. It’s a busy life on the Ring Road, but we like it here. Sometimes the stock runs out faster than the truck can bring it, so we just tell people to check back in a few days.
