Sip Abacus

We are based at Varthur 108. It’s a small place where we teach kids abacus. The room is usually filled with the sound of those plastic beads clicking back and forth. It can get pretty loud when a full group is working on their math problems. Varthur has changed a lot over the last few years, but we’ve stayed in this spot. The address is 108, and it’s basically just a few tables and chairs for the students. We don’t have any big corporate backing or a fancy lobby. It’s just us and the kids. We spend a lot of time grading papers and showing them how to move their fingers on the frames. It’s repetitive work, but you see them get faster over time. Sometimes the parents wait outside on the porch because there isn't much room inside. We try to keep things organized, but with so many children coming in and out, there's always a bit of a mess with bags and shoes at the door. It’s a very local operation. We don’t do much advertising; the kids from the neighborhood just show up. It’s a practical way to spend the afternoons. The building is a bit older, but it serves the purpose. We just keep the classes going and focus on the numbers. It’s a simple routine that we’ve stuck to for a while now. We just open the door, set up the frames, and wait for the kids.
