Our shop is over at 101/4 CBS Plaza on Peddar Road, right in the heart of Mamulpet. If you’ve ever walked through Mamulpet, you know it's a maze of shops and people pushing carts. We are right in the thick of it. We sell a bit of everything—household items, fancy gifts, and decorative pieces. The shelves go all the way up to the ceiling, so we keep a ladder handy to reach the stuff on top. It gets really busy in the afternoons. We spend a lot of time writing out bills by hand and counting change. My brother usually handles the customers while I check the new stock that comes in from the wholesalers. Sometimes the boxes arrive a bit crushed, but we sort through them to make sure the items inside are okay. The floor is old tile and it's worn down in the spots where people stand the most. We keep a small fan behind the counter, but it doesn't do much when the shop is full. People come in looking for things for weddings or housewarmings, and we try to find something that fits their budget. It's a lot of talking and showing different colors and patterns. At the end of the day, we pull down the shutters and sit for a minute before heading home. It's just how life goes in the market and we’ve been here quite a while.
