If you go to Vasanth Nagar, you will find Nagendra Hair Dress at No 18 on the 8th Main and 10th Cross. We are right opposite the Masjid, so you can always hear the calls to prayer throughout the day. It’s a sound we have grown very used to over the years. The shop itself is a basic setup. We have the old-style barber chairs that have been around for a long time. They are still comfortable though. The floor is usually covered in bits of hair until we get a chance to sweep it up between customers. Vasanth Nagar is a busy part of Bangalore, and our corner gets a lot of foot traffic. People are always walking by on their way to the mosque or the local shops. I spend most of my day standing on my feet, so the evening is always a relief. We have a small radio that plays in the background to keep things from being too quiet. The neighborhood is full of small businesses like ours. We know the guy who runs the store next door and the people across the street. It’s a tight-knit community here. Nothing in the shop is very modern, but it does what it needs to do. We just focus on getting the job done for whoever sits in the chair. It is a simple life and we like it that way.
