Nagaraj Provision Stores has been part of this corner for a while now. If you walk through Ulsoor toward Railwaypura and Kalupur 2, you will find us easily enough. The shop is narrow but we pack a lot into the shelves. Every morning begins with rolling up the shutter, which usually makes a loud rattling sound that wakes up the street. We spend the first hour just dusting the jars and making sure the rice bags are stacked in a way that won't let them tip over. It is a bit cramped inside because we try to keep everything people might need for their kitchens. You’ll find lentils, soaps, and those big glass jars filled with sweets that kids like. The light inside is a bit dim, but we know exactly where the turmeric is or which shelf has the specific brand of tea someone wants. Sometimes the delivery trucks block the narrow road and we have to rush to unload the crates of oil or sugar. It’s a lot of lifting and moving things around. We don't have a computer system that does everything; we mostly use a notebook and a pen to keep track of what is running low. Neighbors stop by not just for milk but to complain about the heat or the traffic. By the end of the day, our backs usually ache a bit, but the shop feels like home. We close up when the street lights come on and get ready for the next day.
