Living and working near S C I School means there is always noise when the bell rings. Home Spices is located right in that hub of activity. I usually get here before the kids start arriving, just so I can have some quiet time to set things up. It’s a small operation. We handle everything from the back room mostly. The shelves are usually full, and there is never enough space for the new boxes coming in. We don't bother with fancy signs or big lights. Most of our neighbors just know we are here. Sometimes the parents stop by after dropping their children off. It feels like a very local way to spend the day. We spend a lot of time cleaning because the dust from the road comes in whenever the door stays open too long. My hands usually smell like coriander or turmeric by the end of the day. It’s hard to get that smell off, even with soap. We just do what needs to be done. There isn't a team of managers or anyone like that. It’s just us. We keep the place running because it’s what we’ve always done. The school kids sometimes peek in, curious about the smells coming from our door. It’s a good little spot, even if it gets a bit crowded on the street sometimes. We like being part of the neighborhood here. It’s steady work and it keeps us busy from morning until late afternoon.
