This shop is over on Margosa Road at the 13th Cross in Malleswaram. We are right by the 13th bus stop, so there are always people waiting for their bus right outside our door. No. 123 is the building number. Malleswaram is one of those older parts of Bangalore where the trees are big and the streets feel familiar. We have a fairly standard setup inside. There are rows of chairs and big mirrors that reflect the street outside. We keep a stack of clean towels ready and the basins are always being used for hair washes. It can get pretty noisy when the buses pull up or when the morning market crowd is passing by. We start the day by setting out the combs and checking the clippers. The staff members mostly live nearby, so they know the shortcuts around the 13th Cross. We have a small area for people to sit while they wait their turn. It’s not a very fancy place, just functional. The walls have some simple posters on them, and we have a counter where we keep the register and some pens. Sometimes we have to mop the floor three or four times a day because of the dust coming in from the road. It’s a busy life here, and we just keep moving from one person to the next until it’s time to close the shutters. It’s a very routine way of living, but we are used to it.
