G R Tiffin Corner

G R Tiffin Corner is over in Banashankari 2nd Stage, right at number 717. It’s a busy spot, especially in the early mornings when everyone is rushing to work. We open up quite early to get the stove lit and the idli batter ready. It’s not a big place at all, just enough room to stand and eat quickly before heading out. You can hear the plates clanking and the steam from the cooker all morning long. Most of the time, it’s just us trying to keep up with the orders. Sometimes the line gets a bit long and people have to wait on the pavement outside. We don't have much time for chatting when it’s busy, but we see the same faces every day. The neighborhood has changed a lot, but we’ve stayed in the same spot for years. We use whatever vegetables are good at the market that morning. It’s hard work standing all day, but it’s what we do. My wife handles the chutney and I manage the hot tawa. We don't have a menu on the wall, people just know what we have on offer. Sometimes we run out of things earlier than expected if the crowd is bigger than usual. It’s a bit cramped inside with the sacks of rice and the big containers, but it works for us. If you’re walking past 717, you’ll probably smell the sambar before you see the sign.
