Duccan Cement

Down at Chikballapur, we operate Duccan Cement on S C Road, specifically at the 1st Cross. We are right next to the A P M C Yard, so there is always a huge amount of activity with trucks and tractors moving around. If you come by, you’ll probably see a lot of dust because that’s just the nature of selling cement. We spend our days coordinating with the drivers and making sure the bags are stacked properly so they don't get damaged by the moisture or the heat. It’s heavy work and it keeps the guys in the warehouse pretty tired by the end of the shift. We aren't doing anything fancy here; we just sell cement to the local builders and people who are fixing up their houses. Being near the yard means we have to deal with a lot of noise and the smell of the market, but we’ve gotten used to it over the years. We keep a ledger of all the sales and try to stay on top of the deliveries so nobody is left waiting at a construction site for too long. Sometimes the rain makes things difficult because you can't let the cement get wet, so we have to move fast with the tarpaulins. It’s a basic, honest living and we take it one day at a time. The local tea shop is where we spend our little breaks, just watching the chaos of the S C Road traffic go by until it is time to close up.
