Khazi Street in Basavanagudi has its own rhythm. We are at number 39, right across from the Woodland Plywood shop. It’s an old part of Bangalore, and you can feel it in the air. Our shop is a straightforward place for men to get a haircut or a shave. We don't have any of those fancy reclining chairs, just the solid ones that have seen a lot of use. The mirrors have a few spots on the edges where the silver is coming off. We have been here for years, watching the plywood shop across the road unload their trucks. The street is narrow, so it gets jammed with cars and bikes quite often. We keep a stack of old magazines for people to look at while they wait. The floor is cement, painted a dull color, and we sweep it every hour. We don’t talk much unless the customer wants to. Some people just want to sit in silence and get their hair cut. We use a lot of talcum powder, so there’s always a white dust on the counters. It’s a simple life. We close up when the sun goes down and the street lights flicker on. Basavanagudi is a quiet place at night, and we like the peace. It’s just an honest day’s work for us here at this little spot. We don't need much else besides our tools and a steady stream of customers.
