Working at 37/441 on Suranjandas Road in C V Raman Nagar means being part of a pretty large operation. B E M L Ltd has been here for a long time, and the site is quite expansive. You have to go through the main gates and it’s a bit of a walk to the actual workspace. The road outside is usually packed with buses and workers coming and going, especially during the shift changes. Inside, it’s all about the machinery and the heavy equipment. There’s a constant low hum of power tools and engines being tested. It isn't a quiet place by any means. We wear our work clothes and spend most of the shift on the factory floor or in the technical bays. It’s a lot of routine, following the steps and making sure everything is where it should be. The canteen is where most of us catch up during the break, usually over a plate of rice or some tea. It’s an old-school kind of place with high ceilings and big windows that let in a lot of light but not much breeze. We don’t really do much in the way of decoration; it’s a functional space meant for hard work. Every day feels pretty much the same, but that’s the nature of this kind of industry. We just focus on our own section of the line and try to stay productive until the bell rings. It's hard work.
