Out here in the Chinakuri 12 Pits Colliery area, things move a bit differently. Our office is basically a quarter, number BEQ 18 053, right in the heart of the colliery housing. It’s not like a big city office in Kolkata. We are tucked away in Sundarchak, Burdwan. Most people find us because they know someone who’s been here before. Being a consultant in a place like this means you deal with a lot of local issues and paperwork. The walls of the office could use a fresh coat of paint, but we’re usually too busy with the files. There’s a lot of coal dust around because of where we are. You can see the pits from not too far away. We’ve got a couple of old desks and chairs that have seen better days. The power goes out sometimes, and we just wait it out or light a candle to finish the writing. It’s quiet enough most days, except for the sounds of the colliery. People drop by for advice on all sorts of things. We don't have a receptionist or a coffee machine. If you want tea, we send someone to the stall down the road. It’s a simple setup for a simple job. We’ve been part of this West Bengal community for a long time now. We just do the work that comes our way and try to keep things moving for the folks living around the pits. It is just life.
