Ranjit Kumarmajumder

I am Ranjit Kumarmajumder. I live and work in a village called Sutia, which is near Barasat in the Gaighata area of West Bengal. It’s a bit of a journey to get here if you’re coming from the city, but it’s where I’ve always been. The air is a bit fresher here than in the middle of Kolkata. My place is combined with my post office address, so everyone in the village knows where to find me. It's not a corporate office with glass walls. It’s more of a traditional room with a desk and some chairs for people to sit when they visit. I handle a lot of different things throughout the day. People from the North 24 Parganas district come by often. Some are neighbors, some come from the next village over. We talk about work, the weather, and how the crops are doing. It's a slow pace of life compared to what you see on TV. I don't have a big staff, just me mostly. I use a notebook to keep track of things because it’s easier than looking at a screen all day. Sometimes the power goes out, so you have to be ready for that. I’ve been here for years and I don't see myself moving anywhere else. It’s a simple life. I do my work, help out who I can, and enjoy the quiet evenings. If you come by, you might see some chickens or goats wandering near the path. That’s just Sutia for you.
