Running a place like Deco Furnitures on Mysore Road keeps us on our feet all day long. We are located at number eight in the Nty Layout area, right where the traffic always seems to be crawling. Our floor is usually covered in a bit of dust because we’re constantly moving things around to make space. It’s mostly stacks of wooden frames, finished tables, and a few sets of chairs that people come in to look at. We don’t have a big fancy showroom with bright lights; it’s more of a working space where you can smell the wood and the polish. Sometimes it gets quite loud with the trucks rumbling by outside on the main road. My brother and I, along with a couple of guys, handle the heavy lifting ourselves. We’ve had the same old desk in the corner for years where we keep the ledger and the receipts. Customers usually walk in off the street, and we just talk to them about what they need for their homes. If a chair is heavy, it’s because it’s solid. We don’t try to make things sound better than they are. It’s just us here, moving furniture and trying to get orders out on time. The tea stall next door is where we spend our breaks. It’s a simple life, and the work is hard on the back, but we’re used to it by now.
