Our place, Associated Colour Industries, is located at Plot No. A-1/5 in Phase-1 of GIDC, Vatva. Being in Phase-1 means we’re in one of the older parts of the estate, so the roads are a bit narrow for the big trailers. We work with colors and dyes, so you can imagine the place isn't exactly white. Most of us have some sort of stain on our clothes by the end of the shift, no matter how careful we are. It’s just part of the job. The vats are usually bubbling away, and we spend a lot of time checking the shade matches against the standard samples. It takes a bit of a sharp eye to get it right. We have a small lab where we do the testing, which is probably the cleanest room in the whole building. The rest of the plot is taken up by storage and the production area. We don't use a lot of fancy words to describe what we do. We just make the colors people need and try to get the batches consistent. Dealing with the water supply and the waste is a big part of the daily routine too. Lunch is usually a group affair in the small courtyard out front if the weather is nice enough. It’s a simple operation, run by people who have been around the textile and dye world for a long time.
