Our place, Anuj Metal, is over at Plot No. 5/8 in Phase-1 of the GIDC in Vatva. We are surrounded by other metal shops and factories, so the sound of hammering and grinding is just the background music to our day. The plot isn't huge, but we have managed to fit all our essential gear inside. We handle a lot of metal pieces and they are often heavy and sharp, so we have to be careful as we move them around. The floor is concrete and always has a bit of oil or metal dust on it no matter how much we sweep. We don't have a big corporate team; it is just a handful of us who show up every morning and get to it. We share a laugh over tea in the morning, then we get stuck into the work. The summer heat in Vatva can be pretty intense inside a tin-roofed building, so we drink a lot of cold water and take breaks when we need to. Our neighbors at the other plots are mostly doing similar things, so we often borrow a tool or help each other out if a truck gets stuck. It is a very practical way of life and we don't worry about being polished or perfect. As long as the metal is cut right and the orders are ready on time, we are satisfied. We just take things one day at a time and try to keep the machines running smooth.
