Our place is over at the Gujarat Vepari Maha Mandal in Odhav. We actually have two units, number 240 and 293, which keeps us running back and forth across the lanes all day. Odhav is a busy industrial area, so there is always some kind of noise or smoke in the air. We deal with steel, which means a lot of loading and unloading from flatbed trucks. The office is small and cramped because we use most of the space for storage. We’ve got a couple of old fans that barely work during the summer, but we manage. My brother and I started this quite a while ago, and we’ve seen the whole area change over the years. We spend a lot of time on the phone with suppliers or trying to figure out why a delivery is stuck in traffic. It’s hard work, and your hands are always dirty by lunchtime. We don't really do much advertising; people just know we are here in the Mandal. Sometimes the electricity cuts out in the afternoon, so we just sit outside and talk to the neighbors until it comes back on. It is a simple life of managing stock and making sure the orders are right. There is always something to do, whether it’s fixing a broken rack or re-counting the plates in the back.
