I operate out of a small place at 26/100 in Basai Kala, which is right in the heart of the Tajganj area. If you know Agra, you know this part of town is always crowded with people from all over the world. My day usually starts early before the sun gets too high and the heat becomes too much to handle. I spend a lot of time walking the narrow streets around here. Being a guide isn't just about knowing the dates and the names of the old buildings. It’s more about knowing the shortcuts and where to find a decent cup of tea when you’re tired. My house is close by so I am always around if someone needs help finding their way. It’s a busy life and the tourists can be a lot sometimes, but I like meeting new faces. The area around Basai Kala has a lot of history that isn't always in the books. I try to show people the real side of the neighborhood, not just the famous monuments everyone sees on postcards. It gets very dusty and the noise of the rickshaws never really stops. Sometimes I just sit on the steps and watch the world go by for a bit. It’s not a corporate job with a suit and tie. I just wear comfortable shoes and carry a water bottle. Every day is a bit different depending on who shows up. I’ve lived here my whole life so I know the place well.
