Shubh Laxmi Rice Mills

We are also located on Sirsaganj Road, just like a few other businesses in this area. Shubh Laxmi Rice Mills is where I spend most of my waking hours. The sound of the rice being processed is something you never really get out of your head. It’s a constant humming and clicking. We start work when it’s still cool out because once the afternoon hits, the heat inside the mill is pretty bad. We don't use any complicated systems here. We just look at the grain, feel it with our hands, and know if it’s ready. Sometimes the machinery breaks down and everything stops. Those are the quietest moments, and they usually mean a lot of grease and frustration trying to get things moving again. My clothes are always stained with something, and my boots are worn out from walking on the hard floors. We have a small yard where the tractors pull in. It gets muddy when it rains, making everything a bit of a mess. We don't talk much while we are working because you can't hear anything over the noise anyway. We just use hand signals to tell each other what needs to be moved or adjusted. It’s not the kind of job you do if you want to stay clean, but it’s what we know how to do here on Sirsaganj Road. We just take it one day at a time.
