Heeralal Hair Cutting Salons sits right on Jalesar Road in the Ambal Kheda area of Agra. Most days I get here pretty early before the sun gets too hot and the dust from the road starts blowing into the shop. The main market starts waking up and you can hear the scooters zooming by outside. It is a simple place with a few old chairs and big mirrors that have seen better days. I spend a lot of my time sweeping the floor because the hair just builds up so fast near the doorway. People from around the neighborhood come in for a quick trim or a shave after they finish their work. We talk about the weather or whatever is going on in the news while I work. Sometimes the ceiling fan makes a bit of clicking noise but it keeps the air moving at least. I have my scissors and combs laid out on the wooden counter just how I like them. There is no fancy music playing here, just the sound of the street and people chatting. Agra can be very dusty, so I am always wiping down the glass shelves. Usually, the afternoons are quiet when it is really hot out, then it picks up again in the evening. It is just a regular shop where folks can sit down for a bit. My hands stay busy with the clippers or the spray bottle until late. By the time I close up, my back usually aches.
