Shayoka Departmental Store

Shayoka Departmental Store has been sitting here in Sewak Park for quite a while now. If you walk down Gali Number 4 and look for A-5-6-7, that is where you will find us. It is a bit of a tight squeeze sometimes with all the stock we keep, but we make it work. Most days start pretty early because people need their bread and milk before they head off to their jobs. We spend a lot of time just moving boxes around and trying to find space for new things that arrive on the trucks. The neighborhood is noisy and full of life, which is how we like it. Sometimes the fans don't work as well as they should in the heat, but nobody seems to mind much. We carry a bit of everything, from pulses to cleaning stuff. It is not some big supermarket with bright lights and fancy music. It is just a local shop where we know most of the people by their first names. We talk about the weather or the local news while we weigh out the rice or bag up some sugar. It gets really busy in the late afternoon when the kids come by for snacks after school. We just keep things simple and try to have what people are looking for. It is a lot of hard work standing on your feet all day, but this is what we do. You get used to the rhythm of the street after a few years.
