You can find us on Masjid Road in Gollapudi, right at the Sarakottu Center. The shop is called New Indian Hair Styles Gents Beauty Parlour. It’s a small place that I’ve been running for a while now. Vijayawada is a hot place, so I keep the ceiling fans running at full speed all day. The shop isn't much to look at from the outside, just a blue board and some glass windows that get a bit dusty from the road traffic. Inside, we have three chairs for cutting hair and doing shaves. I use the old-style razors because that’s how I learned. The younger boys come in asking for styles they see on their phones, and I do my best to match them. It’s a neighborhood spot where the men from the nearby houses come to talk about politics or the cricket scores. We keep a stack of old newspapers and some film magazines for people to look at while they wait. The floor is made of simple tiles and I’m always sweeping up hair. Masjid Road is busy, especially on Fridays. Sometimes the cows wander right up to the door. We don't have any fancy air conditioning or leather sofas. Just a basic barber shop for the local guys. I start early in the morning and stay until the last customer leaves. It’s a steady job and I know everyone around here.
