Modern Stone Exports operates out of a quiet spot at 126-a Lane 6 in Ravindrapuri, Bhelupur, Varanasi. The lanes around here can be a bit narrow, so getting big stones in and out takes some careful driving and a lot of patience. Varanasi is a place that never really sleeps, and our little corner of Bhelupur is no different. We spend our time checking the textures of the stones and making sure the crates are built strong enough for the long trips they take. There is usually sawdust all over the floor from when we build the wooden frames for shipping. We aren't a big corporate group. We are just a small team that likes working with our hands. Sometimes we sit out in the lane during our lunch break just to get a bit of fresh air. The stone pieces we handle are heavy and cold to the touch in the morning. We don't have a lot of fancy equipment, so a lot of the work is done with basic tools and a bit of muscle. Customers usually find us through word of mouth rather than any ads. It’s just how things work in this neighborhood. We keep the paperwork in a few old folders and focus more on what is happening in the workshop. It’s a steady life and we’ve gotten used to the rhythm of the lane and the sound of the hammers going.
