Surendra Nursery

Running a nursery like this one near Channi Naka means your hands are basically never clean. I spend most of my time at Surendra Nursery moving pots around or checking why some plants aren't looking so good after a heavy rain. It’s a lot of walking back and forth. People stop by when they’re driving through Channi Naka, usually looking for something green for their balcony or a gift for someone's housewarming. We’ve got rows of saplings in black plastic bags and bigger trees in clay pots that weigh a ton. It gets really hot in the afternoons, so we do most of the heavy watering early in the morning before the sun gets too sharp. Sometimes the bugs get into the hibiscus and we have to deal with that. It’s not a quiet job because there’s always something to trim or soil to mix with manure. The smell of wet earth is pretty much always in the air here. We don't have a big office or anything, just a small stool and a desk where we keep the records. It is a simple life among the leaves. We just focus on keeping the plants alive and making sure people get what they see. If you come by, you’ll probably find me near the back rows where the shade is better. It’s not fancy, but it is what we do here every single day. We just keep planting and waiting for things to grow.
