Vilakethi is where we do all our work, right at 5/79 Velliyankattu Thottamellaikattu. We are known as the Vilakethi Turmeric And Coconut Farmer Producer Company Limited, but it’s mostly just us farmers getting together to deal with the turmeric and coconuts we grow around here. The soil in this part of Vilakethi has always been good for turmeric, turning everything a bit yellow when harvest time comes around. Most days start early before the sun gets too hot over the groves. We spent a lot of time figuring out how to manage the coconut trees because they need a lot of looking after, especially when the rain doesn't show up. Our group isn't some big office thing; it's mostly people who know the land. We sit around the thottam and talk about the price of goods or how the water levels are doing. Sometimes the roads around Velliyankattu get a bit dusty, but that’s just how it is. We handle the drying of the turmeric ourselves and make sure the coconuts are sorted properly. It’s hard work, and your hands get stained and calloused, but it's what we’ve always done. People come by the place to see what’s ready. We don't have fancy brochures or anything. It's just a bunch of us trying to make sure the crops get to where they need to go without too much fuss. If you walk past the gate, you’ll probably see the sheds where we keep the equipment and the bags waiting to be moved. It’s just our way of life.
