Usha Rice Flour & Oil Mill

If you walk down Pathikkal Road in Kannadi Pannicode, you will find Usha Rice Flour & Oil Mill at number 2. It is a busy little spot, especially on the days when everyone seems to need their rice ground at the same time. The smell of the oil press is something you get used to after a while, though it’s very strong if you aren't here every day. We have the oil mill on one side and the rice flour section on the other. It keeps us jumping back and forth between the two. The machines are old but they still work fine as long as we keep them greased and clean. Pannicode is a nice area to work in, and Pathikkal Road has a lot of people moving around. We don't really do much in the way of advertising. Most people know we are here just by the sound of the mill or by word of mouth from their neighbors. It gets very dusty with the flour, so we are constantly sweeping the floors and wiping down the counters. It’s a lot of physical labor, lifting the heavy sacks and pouring the grain into the hoppers. By the time we close up for the evening, we are usually pretty tired and covered in a bit of dust. It is just a regular local business run by regular people who know the trade. We don't have any big plans other than working tomorrow.
