Down here in Edakulam, Irinjalakuda, things move a bit slower than they do in the big cities. Geschmach Food Ingredients Solutions is just our name on the gate, but inside it’s just a group of us working with different food bits and pieces. The building is surrounded by some greenery, which is nice when you look out the window, but we’re usually too busy to look much. We handle a lot of different ingredients, so there is always some kind of smell in the air, sometimes it’s spices and sometimes it’s something else entirely. We aren't a massive factory, just a decent-sized setup where we can keep an eye on everything. Most of the staff lives nearby, so they walk or bike in every day. The office is pretty plain, just some desks and a lot of samples sitting around in jars. We don't have fancy meetings with slides; we just talk over coffee about what needs to be mixed or shipped out. Sometimes the rain here gets really heavy and we have to make sure everything stays dry. It’s honest work, and we don't try to make it sound like more than it is. We just focus on getting the ratios right and making sure the bags are sealed up tight before they go out on the truck to wherever they're going. At lunch, we sit together and talk about things other than work for a bit.
