Cholayil Biofloc Fish Farm Llp

Down here in Valapad Village, specifically at Cholayil Illam near Kazhimbram Post, we have set up this fish farm. We use the biofloc method which is basically about keeping the water in a specific way so the fish grow well. It is a bit technical sometimes but once you get the hang of it, it works out. Chavakkad is where we are based. The house, Cholayil Illam, is where everything started. We have these big tanks set up and they need constant checking. You have to look at the water levels and make sure the air pumps are running right. If the power goes out, we have to move fast. It’s not just sitting and watching fish swim. There is a lot of cleaning and feeding at very specific times. We are just local people trying to make this work. The village is quiet and most of our neighbors know what we are doing with the tanks. The smell of the salt air from the coast sometimes reaches us here in Valapad. We spent a lot of time learning the biofloc system before we actually started. It was a steep learning curve. The fish need to be fed exactly the right amount or the water goes bad. We take turns staying up late to check the oxygen levels if the weather looks stormy. This fish farm lets us stay close to our roots while trying out new technology. Our neighbors often stop by to see the progress.
