If you take the trip down to Wangoo Mamang Sab, you’ll find the Thounaojam family. That’s where Leimarel Handicrafts Producer Companylimited is based, specifically with Thounaojam Shorojini Devi. We’re all about making things by hand. This area is known for its tradition, and we just wanted to keep that going. We aren't a factory with big machines. Everything is done the old way, mostly. You’ll see people sitting around working on different pieces, talking and laughing while they work. It’s a very relaxed environment, though we do have to work hard to get things finished on time. Sometimes the materials we need, like certain types of wood or cane, are hard to find, so we have to wait or travel a bit to get them. We don't have a big showroom. Our products are usually stacked up in the corner of the room until they’re ready to be sent out. It’s honest, manual work that requires a lot of patience. We’ve all got callouses on our hands and we’re proud of that. We aren't interested in making thousands of identical items. Each one is a little bit different because a real person made it. We just want to make sure these skills don’t die out and that the people in Wangoo have a way to earn a living from what they know best. It is just our way of keeping the local culture alive.
