Korou Farmers Producer Company Limited

Our office is based at Khumukcham Nando Singh’s house in Kakching Khunou. It is a bit of a drive to get out here from the main town, but this is where the actual farming happens. Most of the people involved with Korou Farmers are out in the fields for the better part of the day. We set this company up because individual farmers were having a hard time trying to do everything on their own. Now we can sit down together and figure out things like where to get seeds or who to sell our crops to. It is a very practical setup. We don't have a secretary or anything like that. If the front door is open, someone is probably inside checking the books. Kakching has really good soil, so we focus on making the most of that. It gets very dusty in the dry season and quite muddy when the rains come. That is just part of the job. We spend time talking about prices, the cost of moving goods, and how to get the harvest to the market in Thoubal or Imphal without things spoiling. It is hard work and it doesn't leave us much time for sitting around. We aren’t trying to be some huge corporation. We just want to make sure our families can keep on farming. It’s a simple life out here. We share our tools and give advice when a neighbor's crop isn't doing well. We just do what needs doing to keep going.
