Netaji Nagar High School

We have been here at No : 8D, Subramaniya Swamy Sannathi Street for a long time now. People in Puliyangudi know where the school is because of the old banyan tree nearby. It gets quite hot in Tirunelveli during the summer months, but the classrooms are okay once you get used to it. We start early in the morning before the sun gets too high. There are kids coming from all over the neighborhood, some walking and some on cycles. The bell rings at eight-thirty and then it is just a lot of noise until the classes actually start. We spend a lot of time making sure the registers are filled out correctly and the blackboards are cleaned. Sometimes the chalk dust gets everywhere, on our clothes and the desks. The school building is an older style, so we have to fix things like the fans or the lights quite often. It is just a regular school where we teach the subjects required. Most of the teachers live nearby and we have been working together for years. We see the kids grow up from small ones to teenagers who are ready to leave for college. It is just part of life here in this street. We don’t have fancy things, just the basics like benches and a small ground for them to play during the lunch break. Sometimes we sit in the staff room and talk about the local news while drinking tea. It is a simple life.
