We’ve been running this Western Union spot in Vizhinjam for a good while now. Our small shop is tucked away near the LP School, so we get to see the kids running around every morning and afternoon. It’s a pretty simple setup inside. Just a couple of desks, a computer that sometimes acts up, and enough chairs for people to wait. Most folks come in to pick up money sent from family members working abroad. It’s a lot of paperwork and checking IDs, which can take time if the internet is being slow. We don’t have fancy air conditioning, just a ceiling fan that works hard to keep the Thiruvananthapuram heat at bay. Sometimes we just sit and talk with the regulars about the weather or how the local fishing is going. The shop doesn't look like those big bank offices you see in the city. It’s a bit cluttered with ledgers and old pens. When the rain starts pouring down, we usually have to move the chairs back from the door so they don't get soaked. It’s just us doing the daily work and making sure people get their cash without too much trouble. We know most of the people around here by their first names. It’s a quiet life for the most part, except when the school bell rings. We’ll be here tomorrow morning just like today, waiting for the first person to walk through the door.
