Up here on Lourdes Hills in Kuttychel, the air is a bit different than in the middle of Thiruvananthapuram. Our college has been part of this landscape for years. If you take the road out to Kuttychel, you’ll find us tucked away where it’s a bit quieter. We have several buildings for the different science and tech departments. The walk between labs can be a bit steep because of the hills, but you get used to it after a week or two. Students spend a lot of time in the labs or sitting out on the steps between classes. It isn’t always quiet, especially when everyone is rushing to get to their next lecture or heading to the canteen for tea. The staff here mostly live around the city and commute in every day. We have a lot of books in the library and the computer labs are usually full until late afternoon. During the monsoon, the whole place turns very green, though the rain can make the walk to the bus stop a bit of a mess. It’s a practical place to study. We don’t have fancy lounges or anything, just classrooms, equipment, and plenty of space to think. People here are mostly focused on their exams and getting through the semester. It feels like a small community once you’ve been here a few months and know everyone’s face.
