Sheetal Sweets

You can find Sheetal Sweets on Jogeshwari West Station Road, right near Kothi. Since we are so close to the station, there is never a quiet moment. You can hear the trains pulling in and the announcements over the speakers all day long. We start our work very early, usually while it is still dark outside, to get the milk boiling and the sweets shaped. The kitchen area gets really hot from the big vats we use, and the smell of sugar and cardamom stays on our clothes even after we go home. We have rows of glass cases where we put out the fresh batches every morning. Sometimes we make too much of one thing and not enough of another, but we try to guess what people will want based on the day of the week. Station Road is always crowded with people rushing to catch their trains, so they often just point at what they want and we wrap it up in boxes as fast as we can. We don't have much space for people to linger, which is probably for the best given how busy the sidewalk is outside. It’s hard work and our backs usually ache by the end of the shift, but it’s what we do. We’ve seen the neighborhood change a lot, but the demand for something sweet after a long commute stays the same.
